Zinc for Life Program
The International Zinc Association has recently launched an ambitious 3-year Zinc for Life program, with a goal of positioning zinc as a material of environmental choice for engineers, architects and other specifiers.
After a thorough search, Five Winds International, a well recognized group in the fields of sustainable development and environmental performance has been selected as the main consultant to help advise and implement the various program components. Five Winds International has extensive experience working with metals and mining, as well as chemicals, automotive and building construction. The group has offices in the United States, Canada and Germany. The Zinc for Life program will be managed by its German office.
The Implementation plan involves two major program areas C LCA Methodology and Data Generation, and Outreach and Communications C which will include 11 separate projects. One major objective will be to develop a comprehensive LCA-based environmental information. These measures will be critical when comparing specific zinc products to other materials on an environmental basis. Comparative LCAs will also be conducted on market-relevant zinc products such as galvanized steel utility poles (as compared to wood and concrete) and zinc die castings in automotive applications (as compared to aluminum and plastics).
Within the Outreach and Communications area, comprehensive analysis will be conducted in the automotive and construction sectors to better understand environmental criteria, databases and otherfactors which influence the selection of materials, including zinc. A communication strategy will also be developed that will deliver information generated in this program to all the key stakeholders.
Five Winds project leader, Dr. Ivo Mersiowsky commented We are pleased to partner with IZA to manage and implement the Zinc for Life program which embodies the best elements of a sustainable materials strategy. It is science based, proactive in its approach to both risks and opportunities and it involves collaboration with the users of zinc to work together on creating more sustainable products.
